Copper Candlestick Holder
Project type
Design and Technology
Date
2021
Location
Buckingham
Project Overview
A candle holder inspired by the structure and movement of bird wings. The aim was to explore how natural forms can inform functional design, using the material copper for its attractive sheen and fireproof properties. You can use the candle holder in different bottles, making it adaptable and giving a purpose to unrecycled bottles.
Inspiration
I was inspired by my local landscape and its large biodiversity and wanted to find a way to transform the organic forms into a functional design. One animal that stood out to me was the Red Kite as I spent my childhood watching them soar above my head and I found a beauty in their familiarity. Faced with the challenge of creating a functional design I chose to base my design on a similar looking bird, the eagle, because its more symmetrical shape made for a more ergonomic, functional, visually appealing and sculptural design. This design showed off the full wingspan and balance of the bird in flight capturing the beauty of its more powerful natural characteristics.
